Use of hide in Native creations from animals like steer, deer, elk, and bison is integral to the Native belief that an animal’s spirit lives on in the hide.
Native Innu referred to Labradorite as the 'fire stone' because of its inner beauty and resemblance to the greatest light show on earth, the Northern Lights. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Innu tribes lived inland whilst the Inuit tribes lived along the coast, but because of the presence of Labradorite gemstones in the rocks beneath all of their feet, there was a widespread and mutual appreciation for its magical properties. The legend goes that an Inuit warrior discovered the astounding array of colours inside the gemstones and perceived them as the lights of the aurora trapped inside the rocks, so he gave them an almighty whack with his spear to free them to the skies in which they belonged. The light that remained on earth remained inside the Labradorite gemstones. With heavenly properties absorbed from the Northern Lights, Labradorite delivers the inner peace and tranquillity that many of us need to deal with the stresses of everyday life.
